Blair Fraley Sales Store

In our early years, the local school offered the children only elementary studies, so it was necessary for those who wished to continue their education to leave Crossnore. At first, Dr. Mary Martin Sloop asked some of her friends and relatives to send clothing that could be used by the children when they went away to school. One friend, who had recently been through a period of mourning, sent a trunk full of somber black clothes-hardly suitable for a child on the way to school, but they quickly caught the eye of some of the mountain women who came to see the doctor. They offered to buy, and thus was born the idea of the Second Hand Sale, operated for years by Aunt Pop and Uncle Gilmer Johnson.

The second hand store has now grown into a busy emporium that is an important source of income for the school. Articles that cannot be used by the children or on campus are sold in the store. The Blair Fraley Sales Store has come a long way from its humble roots as a weekly sale from Dr. Sloop's front porch. In fact, there have been over four different Sales Store Buildings. The current $1 million building is named for Blair Fraley, the daughter of Trustee John Fraley and his wife, Guyann , who died in a bicycle accident when she was nine.
