When Crossnore Academy opened the 2001 school year in its new Wayne Densch Education Building, it instituted a school dress policy that included a prescribed uniform. This uniform is quite simple, consisting of khaki pants or skirts and polo shirts and sweaters of certain colors.

The advantage of providing a school uniform in our setting is obvious and immediate. Children are very conscious of their own clothes in relation to what others are wearing. With a uniform policy in place, a child can come into care one day, and join his or her new school mates the very next day, dressed just like them.

For $200 you can provide a complete uniform set for a young person at Crossnore.

"He followed me home, Mom. Can I keep him?"

Maybe you've heard such a touching plea as a parent. Maybe you spoke it as a child when a stray dog liked your scent and followed you all the way to your door. Either way, your heart was on the line.

Somehow the presence of a pet makes life's lessons easier to absorb. And having that pet teaches responsibility. An animal family born on campus in the summer of 2002 is helping all of our children learn vital lessons of caring. A mother dog of ill defined pedigree delivered seven puppies at an employee's home. This first abandoned litter, and three more puppies given to the children at Christmas, now provide a pet for each cottage. We've made the dogs a part of the Crossnore family and they are helping us break the cycle of abuse many of our children have faced.

We started a "pet nurturing" program that teaches children-through their responsibilities for the dogs-how to deal with human problems. Our children were not always nurtured at home and they've learned very negative ways to deal with conflict and behavioral problems.

Want to teach unconditional love? What if the puppy chews up their favorite toy, or messes on the floor? Do we beat it or kick it halfway across the room? Do we throw it outside and shout that we wish it had never been born and we never want to see it again? These dogs in the pet nurturing program will present many, many teachable moments for our children.

The dogs' food bill has become a constant in our budget expense. They've needed to see the vet and have shots, collars, blankets and special toys. Even providing these things has been a way to teach the children their responsibility toward those who depend on them.

When our little ones throw on a jacket and slippers to run out and feed the dogs in the morning, they are learning responsibility, nurture, caring. And those buckets of dog food keep disappearing!

Remember us when you enjoy your own pet, and help us take care of ours!

Many friends like to remember the children at Crossnore School during Christmas with special gifts so they realize people love them, even if they can't be home. The Bird Cage is a storage area for Christmas and birthday gifts for the boys and girls of Crossnore School. It was named years ago when gifts were stored in the attic of the old dining hall-behind a wall constructed of chicken wire. It looked just like a big bird cage! Today our friends still send gifts earmarked "The Bird Cage."
