Phyllis
Crain, Ed. D., Executive Director

Executive Director since 1999, Dr. Phyllis Crain is a
former award winning teacher and administrator, and came
to The Crossnore School having served as superintendent
of Avery County Schools. She is a graduate of Wofford
College, and earned a masters degree from Converse College.
She earned her doctorate in Administration, Curriculum
and Instruction from the University of South Carolina.

Sharon Smith Wise (Buggs), Assistant Excecutive Director

With a distinguished career of thirty years with the Avery County School System, Bugg’s, as she is affectionately known, has worked with Crossnore as a consultant and as principal of the Academy. She now serves as Assistant Executive Director, supervising the clinical staff, the residential program, the health and wellness program, the spiritual program and campus-wide education. She has an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a masters in counseling from Appalachian State University plus a certificate in administration from the University of Tennessee. |

Wilma
Biggerstaff, Chief Operations Director

Wilma is a graduate of Mayland Community College.
In her 32 years of service to Crossnore School, she has
worked in the business operations of the agency as bookkeeper,
controller and Director of Support Services. She now serves
as Chief Operations Director assisting Dr. Crain with
day to day operations of the agency and strengthening
teamwork within and between teams on campus. |

Laura Laughridge, Chief Advancement Officer

Laura has been at Crossnore since April of 2004. She has a Master's degree in English from Appalachian State University and has worked in the legal field for over 14 years. Since coming to Crossnore, she has worked to procure licensing for the Adoption Placement Program, developed the museum at Crossnore Weavers and Gallery and established the Crossnore Fine Arts Gallery, among other projects. Currently her work involves growing The Crossnore School's endowment through funds- and friend raising, grant writing, marketing and ongoing development of planned giving programs.

Maria Russell, Intake Specialist, Aftercare, and Adoption

Maria did her undergraduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed her Master of Arts in Christian Counseling at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. She serves as the Intake Specialist, works with our Aftercare Program, and will continue to develop the already successful Adoption Placement Program. |

Melynda
Martin Pepple, Director of Public Relations

A
graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro,
Melynda joined Crossnore School as public relations director
and volunteer coordinator in 2001. She is the daughter
of former executive director, Bob Martin, and lived on
campus as a child. Melynda is available to share the Crossnore
story with DAR chapters, churches and civic groups. Please

Rachel Hoilman- Principal of the Crossnore Academy

A graduate of Appalachian State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Rachel joined the Crossnore Academy staff in 2006. She comes to the Academy with more than 30 years of experience in public school education. She has an undergraduate degree in Political Science, a masters' degree in Media Education, and a specialist degree in Public School Administration. She is responsible for the educational leadership and management of the Academy.
