Academy Director of Education Marian Krege
Education
Director Marian Krege believes the exceptional facilities
and Crossnore's commitment to educational excellence will
make Crossnore Academy "the school of choice for parents
of children who need an environment that provides a small
student teacher ratio." Krege has taught in Avery County
and Watauga County schools and at Lees-McRae College. At
Crossnore since July 2000, she supervises all teachers and
assistants for 60-70 school students, plus day care staff.
Virtually
all Crossnore residents attend Crossnore Academy, plus four
students from the community who benefit from the structure.
Crossnore School, Inc. began as a school in 1913 when there
were no public schools in Avery County. When public education
became available for all children, Crossnore leaders refined
their role to care for orphaned, abandoned, abused and neglected
children. Those children also attended public schools. Time
and change continued to refine the needs that Crossnore
met. Eventually, it became difficult for local schools to
meet the needs of Crossnore residents and in 199__, Crossnore
founded Crossnore Academy as one of the 100 original charter
schools approved with innovative legislation by North Carolina
lawmakers. In May 2001 Crossnore dedicated the new Wayne
Densch Education Building to house the academy. It is the
finest school building in Avery County and accommodates
grades K-12, as well as a day care center used by the community
and the youngest Crossnore residents. Attendance is open
to exceptional community students whose special needs can
best be served by the specialized teaching faculty. For
questions, call 828-733-5241. Enrollment Policies: The school
will not discriminate against any student on the basis of
ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender or disability.
The school will admit students in the local LEA who have
the needs that can be met and provided by the Academy. A
screening process will be in effect to insure that applicants
to the Academy have an assessed need for the special services
that are integrated parts of daily classroom activities.
If more students apply and qualify for the program than
the school can accommodate, a fair and equitable system
of selection will be implemented. When possible, preference
will be given to children who are in out-of-home placement.
Overflow applicants will be selected on the basis of need
and then by lottery. Application Link Our Mission: Crossnore
